Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well

Sunday night's Oscar hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway joked early and often about how they were brought in to make the 83rd edition of the movie awards program young and hip. And while their enthusiasm was infectious and their timing spot-on, it was a segment they didn't appear in halfway through the show that dragged the sometimes-tired movie/music bits kicking and screaming into the present.
OK, maybe into 2009, but it's a start. "As we all know, this was the year of the movie musical," Franco proudly proclaimed, as Hathaway stood beside him in a glittering silvery gown, looking puzzled.
"I'm sorry, did I miss something? I thought there were hardly any musicals this year," she responded. "Guess again, Anne," Franco smirked, setting up one of the night's funniest moments.
What followed was an unexpectedly silly musical tribute that began with the instant classic "Tiny Ball of Light," credited to Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1." Taking a pivotal scene in the woods where the longtime pals reunite, Ron and Hermione are drawn into a finger-snapping R&B slow jam with a thumping beat and over-the-top Auto-Tune effects that would make T-Pain proud.
"This ball of light, this tiny ball of light floated through my chest, floated through me right here," Weasley stutter-sings as an incredulous Granger croons, "What exactly did it say, may I ask?" The sure-to-be-viral classic artfully reimagined the dialogue from the film and was right out of the "Saturday Night Live" school of digital-short musical parodies.
That number was followed by another Auto-Tune-ification, this time of Woody and the gang from "Toy Story 3," via the funktastic "We're Still Here." "Through every yard sale, we're still here, through every spring cleaning, we're all still here," Woody sings in his best club-crawling tone.
The capper, though, was courtesy of Mr. SNL Digital Short himself, Justin Timberlake. Taking the pivotal scene in "The Social Network" where Timberlake's Sean Parker lays out his manic vision for Facebook to the site's founders, the dialogue was transformed into a Euro disco banger, opening with his digitally skipped pitch, "Facebook, Facebook, Faa-aaa-aaa-cebook."
The song, "Fishing for Facebook," worked the infamous "14 trout" speech into the kind of slick club come-on that might easily have been a B-side to one of Timberlake's own albums. The piece ended with Timberlake dropping his signature line, "A million dollars isn't cool. You know what's cool?" over a driving beat, then pausing a moment before adding: "a billion dollars."
Just to make sure they snagged the kids, the musical tribute ended with "He Doesn't Own a Shirt" a pretend slow jam from "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," in which a jealous Edward Cullen sneers, "Doesn't he own a shirt?" at romantic (and, yes, shirtless and ripped) rival Jacob Black. In the background, a group of female singers explained, "He's too sexy for a shirt" and "She's so glad he doesn't have a shirt" as Bella Swan embraced her werewolf pal.

James Franco backstage at the 2011 Oscars
Photo: James Franco
The Oscars were going for young and hip, and they definitely got it in co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway. In fact, Franco dragged the often staid 83rd annual Academy Awards right up to the present by tweeting about his hosting gig during the broadcast and uploading a series of backstage videos and candid photos to his followers.
He started off his day by posting a video of himself groggily waking up before getting ready for his big gig, then posting a series of photos of the hours leading up to the show and a video preview of his social media plans. "Hey there, it's James Franco. I am talking to you from my suite pretty close to the Kodak Theatre," he said, panning across his room. "You should look out for a few tweets during the show."
As the magic hour approached, the multi-hyphenate actor/artist/Ph.D. student uploaded photos showing him escorting his grandmother into the theater, getting his makeup on, frowning in a high school senior superlative Best Smile pic to remind himself to show his pearly whites during the broadcast and encouraging fans to follow him at the hashtag #OscarsRealTime.
What followed were clips of him entering the elevator on his way up to the stage, a video of his backstage walk to the holding area and, under the heading "these were my famous last words," a clip of him saying nervously, "It might be bad," as an offscreen voice asked him for any parting words to his fans before walking out to open the show.
Franco also posted a clip of him and Hathaway laughing while watching a video together during a commercial break early in their duties, a photo of him flipping off the camera while getting his Marilyn Monroe dress and makeup applied and a video of him waiting to take the stage in drag. Other postings included a video of him interviewing the Oscars head writer backstage during the show and a photo of him and Hathaway with Oprah Winfrey.
He was seemingly as busy behind the scenes as he was in front of them, as he found time to snap photos with Billy Crystal, take a pic of himself onstage, shoot video from the wings of Randy Newman's performance and film a clip of a commercial break bit of time filler during which Hathaway joked with the audience about taping PowerBars under the nominees' seats so they could keep their energy up during the show.
Given the volume of material Franco posted, it's a wonder he could even concentrate on his hosting duties. He also gave a video glimpse of Florence Welch getting ready to perform, another of him self-deprecatingly listening to the intro to the segment on his work in "127 Hours" and a clip of him getting a late-show hand massage from Hathaway. One photo showed him having a post-Oscars celebratory drink with the words "Goodbye LA" scrawled on the pic. This was followed by a shot outside his plane window with the caption, "It was fun! Have to get back to class!"

Between album sales, movie profits, licensing arrangements and lucrative deals for Cirque du Soleil shows, the estate of late King of Pop Michael Jackson has raked in more than $300 million since the singer's shocking death in June 2009.
According to TMZ, legal documents released on Thursday reveal that executors of MJ's estate have managed to make a major dent in the more than $400 million in debt that Jackson owed at the time of his death.
The first accounting from the executors shows that they have already spent around $159 million paying back various debts, income taxes and other expenses, which include providing support for the pop star's mother, Katherine Jackson, as well as his three young children.
"Although there remain unresolved creditor claims, pending litigation and additional challenging business, tax and legal issues, and the estate is not yet in a condition to be closed, the executors have made substantial progress in reducing the estate's debt," the documents state, according to a Reuters report. Two of Jackson's longtime confidants, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, were named as administrators in a will sign by the pop icon.
In addition to paying to make "substantial improvements" to the Jackson family's Havenhurst estate in Encino, California, the executors also spent an undetermined amount of money on "last illness and funeral and memorial service expenses." Those costs included a $900,000 payment to the Forest Lawn Memorial cemetery where Jackson is buried and $35,000 on expenses described as "costume for memorial."
TMZ reported that not only did the famously cash-strapped Jackson have more than $400 million in debt, but his estate also owed more than $40 million to concert promoter AEG tied to the scuttled This Is It Tour, for which MJ was rehearsing when he died unexpectedly. They've also paid $27.2 million in taxes and $4 million in mortgage payments on Jackson's properties.
Despite the solid sales of the Michael album and millions of units of the singer's back catalog being sold, as well as the box office of the "This Is It" movie and DVD sales, the estate is not nearly out of the woods. TMZ noted that the administrators have received more than 65 creditors' claims, some of which are subject to "extremely high" interest rates, and there are several outstanding lawsuits against the estate in several countries.

Winning an award on Oscar weekend is generally a time for celebration, but for M. Night Shyamalan and the ladies of "Sex and the City 2," Saturday night's near clean sweep at the 31st Annual Golden Raspberries was likely to inspire anything but. What a twist.
Created to (dis)honor the very worst in cinema during the previous year, the Razzies bestowed their top prize to Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender." Based on the anime series "Avatar," "Airbender" took home five trophies, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D and Worst Supporting Actor for co-star Jackson Rathbone.
The wins were a breakthrough of sorts for the director once thought to be among the very best of his generation, as Shyamalan's previous film, "The Happening," was nominated for, but failed to win, Worst Picture and Worst Director at the 2008 Razzies.
"Sex and the City 2" managed to score three gold spray-painted statuettes, including wins for Worst Sequel, Worst Screen Ensemble and Worst Actress, which was presented to all four of the flick's stars — Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Also winning at the satirical awards show were Aston Kutcher, who took home the Worst Actor prize for his performances in both "Killers" and "Valentine's Day," and Jessica Alba, winner of Worst Supporting Actress for her turns in four films — "The Killer Inside Me," "Little Fockers," "Machete" and "Valentine's Day."

Spears and producer Dr. Luke post 10-second audio clip for second single off new album Femme Fatale.

Just two days after Britney Spears released her highly anticipated video for "Hold It Against Me," the 29-year-old diva is back to give fans another treat with a brief snippet from her next single, "Inside Out."
"C'mon! Won't you give me something to remember," Spears sings in the barely 10-second clip, revealed by the singer and her producer, Dr. Luke, on Twitter.
"Baby shut your mouth and turn me inside," she crescendos.
For fans, the brief snippet is a welcome treat, but hardly a surprising one, considering that Spears teased "Hold It Against Me" in similar fashion for several weeks.
In an interview with MTV News, Spears' longtime manager himself, Larry Rudolph, indicated that fans were likely to hear another song before the March 29 release of Femme Fatale, the Mississippi native's first album in three years.
Of the song itself, which he would only speak of obliquely on Thursday, Rudolph had high praise.
"I don't think I've been this excited about releasing a Britney single in many, many years," he said. "It's that good. That's all I'm gonna say about it at the moment. I haven't heard a final mix of it, but I should get it in the next day or two. So far, what I've heard is just extraordinary. It really is amazing. Her fans will be very happy with it. I'm trying hard to get it out before the album comes out."

For those fans and critics who think Foxy Brown's only "records" involve prison stints - get prepared for a new double album from the hip-hop diva.
Get the deets on Foxy's latest project inside plus hear what Waka Flocka has to say about last week's tour bus shooting and what happens to Remy Ma now that she's lost her appeal.
Foxy Brown reports that she is in the studio recording what will be the first double-album released by a female hip-hop artist called Black Roses.
"I'm in the studio every night, slaving. It's going to be really big. One side is going to be straight Hip Hop and hardcore records, and a couple big radio joints, and then the other side is Dancehall-Rock."
And in an interview with Billboard.com, Foxy says last week's story about her being intoxicated and getting kicked out of a fashion show after-party was pure fiction. Foxy says she isn't even a drinker.
And if you want to know what she thinks about the Nicki Minaj vs. Lil Kim beef, she had this to say:
Nicki has always been cool with me. She and I have something online I did for her -- it was a video shoot with Lil Wayne and Rick Ross, [when] she wasn't signed yet. And she was like, "Foxy is the first female artist who ever embraced me." She was classy; she was articulate. I'm so proud of her.
Of course, people everywhere clearly are saying, "She wants to be Foxy, she wants to be Kim." Everybody's going to say that. But do I think she's doing an incredible job at branding herself? Yes, I do. When you're an icon in the music business…like Mary J. Blige. Keyshia Cole came out after her, [but] you didn't hear Mary J. Blige starting a beef with her just because they compared [Keyshia to] her. Mary J. Blige stayed clean. She does what she does, and I do what I do.
And in other music news...
Waka Flocka is speaking out about the shooting that occurred outside his tour bus on February 16 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“I wasn’t scared. I felt like that wasn’t my time -- you know what I’m saying. Stuff happens for a reason so God can let you know that’s not the way he wants you to go no more.”
We told you earlier that Waka said he was not involved in the shooting. He added, "I was chilling. I wasn’t a part of that.”
So far, six men have been apprehended by the local police department for what may have been a failed robbery attempt. Waka’s publicist, Kali Bowyer, released a statement saying the rapper and his team were “pleased” with the arrests.
“We are pleased with the attentiveness by the Charlotte Police Department in capturing these individuals in such a timely manner. It is such a shame that one would risk the lives of innocent women and children in hopes of stealing one’s jewelry,” said Kali.
Waka is now working on the Triple F Life: Friends, Fans, and Family project, the follow-up to his debut album Flockaveli, which is expected out later this year. But in stores now, he has a 24-track mixtape titled Salute Me Or Shoot Me 3 to tide over fans.
Also in musical prison news....
Remy Ma will likely remain locked up until 2016 after New York's highest court upheld her eight-year prison term for shooting a friend during a dispute in 2008.
The New York Court of Appeals' 5-2 decision rejected Remy's claim that her lawyer should have been allowed to argue that the shooting was an accident resulting from a struggle for the gun.
Remy has already served three years at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women. Damn homie.

We imagine what Justin will be doing on his birthday
Photo: Getty Images
Justin Bieber turns 17 on March 1, and he's revealing what his plans are for the big day.
"I only have, like, four days, so I'm just going to relax, because I start my world tour starting on [March 4] -- so just going to mentally prepare and just relax," Justin told "Entertainment Tonight." "No birthday bash. ... Hopefully my grandparents will be out here and I'll be able to spend time, a little bit, with them. My grandma makes the best cheesecake -- cherry cheesecake. She made that for my 13th birthday."
Of course, Bieber's birthday isn't the only thing making headlines these days. His new haircut has also been causing quite the hoopla, but Bieber seems to be brushing it off. "I just wanted to [cut my hair], that's all. Not really a big reason; I just woke up and said, 'I don't want this anymore,' so I just cut it," he said. "It's not really about that. You know, the fans really liked it, but they'll like me no matter what, because I think it's about the music. I'm really excited to see what the fans overseas think and take it day by day."
Bieber will re-release his 3-D flick "Never Say Never" this weekend. "It's 40 minutes of extra footage, so it's basically like a new movie," he says. "It's real exciting, because it shows me and my friends more and it shows a different part of the concert, so it's going to be great. Hopefully all the fans will go back and watch it."
Next week, in addition to his birthday, Bieber will also kick off his European tour. "I'm excited to see what [Willow Smith] brings to the table," he said. "We start on March 4, so she's really excited, and she told me that she can't wait -- and she's adorable -- so I can't wait.
"I have such great people around me and such good family," he added. "I just want to be a good role model to people, and to be able to just make good music. ... I'm going to make mistakes, but it's about learning from them and becoming better. ... My movie shows that anything is possible and dreams do come true. ... Remember to always stay humble and always be gracious and anything can happen."

Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis and Jenna Fischer quip about some memorable dating experiences with MTV News.

Jason Sudeikis and Owen Wilson in "Hall Pass"
Photo: New Line Cinema
Those who have seen the trailer for Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis' new comedy, "Hall Pass," know that in the Farrelly brothers-directed film, the duo embark upon a series of zany misadventures after obtaining "hall passes" — basically a one-week vacation/break from their marriages — from their wives. During this marital hiatus, the boys do everything they can to pick up women, oftentimes using the most outlandish and ridiculous of pickup lines.
When MTV News caught up with Wilson, Sudeikis and fellow co-star Jenna Fischer recently during the film's press day, we asked them to share their go-to lines, as well as a few they've used with success.
"Hi, I'm Jason Sudeikis," Wilson quipped, which prompted a witty exchange between him and the "Saturday Night Live" star.
"Aw, that's very nice of you," Sudeikis said. "Does that work for you?"
"Yeah!" Wilson exclaimed, laughing.
And then Sudeikis focused a bit, seeming to put some thought into the question, only to make room for more for Wilson laughter and more back-and-forth banter between the two.
"My most successful one is, 'How much do you cost?' " Sudeikis joked. "And you have to use that specifically."
"Hold that for Valentine's Day," Wilson advised, even though Sudeikis clearly wasn't paying attention and went on with reciting bad pickup techniques.
" 'Are those real?' " Sudeikis said. " 'Your eyes. I'm talking about your dreams.' "
" 'Are they realistic?' " Wilson added.
Fine, fine. If they won't take the question seriously then we won't. Next up, a few of the best and worst pickup lines the fellow castmembers have heard over the years.
"Usually women will insult me," Sudeikis explained. " 'I don't see why you're so great.' And then, for some reason, I find that completely alluring."
"Ok, I'm going to win you over!" Wilson added. "Ok, sit right here. Settle in for the next hour or three — here we go," he joked.
Following with the theme of insults as pickup lines, Jenna Fischer recalled a particular unsettling experience.
"I had this guy come up to me at a bar when I was much younger and he had said, 'I bet I can guess your weight and if I do, can I get a kiss?' And I thought to myself, 'What?! No! What woman wants to talk about her weight? What if you're wrong? What if you're right? I don't care, anyway,' " she said. "The idea that you just approached me with the most objectified vision of me, you whittled me down to a number, was so offensive."
Needless to say, Fischer was not particularly receptive to that line.
"He did not get a kiss," she added.
Check out everything we've got on "Hall Pass."

Amy Adams scored her first best supporting actress Oscar nomination in 2005 for the indie dramedy Junebug, then another in 2008 for her acclaimed performance opposite Meryl Streep in Doubt... and she'll once again compete for that prize at Feb. 27's Academy Awards, this time for her turn as a fiery Boston bartender in The Fighter. But for Adams, the novelty of an Oscar nod has far from worn off. In fact, the 36-year-old actress insists that there's something -- or rather someone -- making this year's nomination just a bit more meaningful than the previous two: Adams' 9-month-old daughter Aviana.
"(This year's nomination is) special because I have a daughter now, and she can see Mommy and all of that," the actress tells Entertainment Tonight. And see mommy she will, as Adams plans to spend all day Sunday getting in some quality time with Aviana. "I'm going to hang out with little girl this time around," she says of her pre-Oscars plans.
Adams' movie The Fighter is nominated for seven awards on the night, including best picture, best director (David O. Russell) and best supporting actor (Christian Bale). Adams will also face off against costar Melissa Leo for the supporting actress statuette. And although many Oscar predictions are calling for Leo to snag the victory in that category, Aviana sure would be proud if Mommy won her first Oscar.

Erstwhile Fall Out Boy frontman's solo EP made iTunes debut Tuesday.

Patrick Stump
Photo: Michael Caulfield/WireImage
Late last year, when Patrick Stump told MTV News that his solo debut, Soul Punk, was tentatively due in February, there was much rejoicing from long-suffering Fall Out Boy fans, all of whom were clamoring for any bit of news surrounding their favorite group.
Of course, that rejoicing was tempered some when it was subsequently announced that Stump had pushed back Soul Punk in favor of a six-song EP called Truant Wave. And on Tuesday, with little lead-up and absolutely zero promotion, that EP premiered on iTunes. It not only provided FOB fans a preview of where Stump is headed, musically, but also served as a point of division among their ranks. Some loved the electronic-leaning, R&B-teasing jams, while others, well, they were probably hoping Stump would return to his pop-punk roots.
When he spoke to MTV News on Thursday, Stump addressed both sides of the issue, because, quite frankly, he understands why some would be upset by his new direction. In fact, that's part of the reason he put out Truant Wave in the first place: to soften the blow.
"I really want Soul Punk to have as much of a chance to have it be listened to discerningly," he laughed. "And if I'm going to disappoint people by not [making] Take This to Your Grave, Part II, I would rather do that before Soul Punk, because that record means something to me."
Of course, there were other reasons for rushing the EP out, most of which he learned the hard way during Fall Out Boy's final days.
"Remember when Fall Out boy was putting out Folie à Deux and were going to put it out on Election Day, and then, for all these various reasons, all signs pointed to 'Don't do this'? That was sort of the case here. The logistics just weren't lining up," he explained. "And I had way too much material. ... A lot of it didn't make sense on the record, but it still felt like something, so I made a little mini-record out of them, and it sort of became a concept record for me. So for all those reasons and more, I decided, 'Screw it, I'm going to put this out.' "
So, yes, Soul Punk is still coming, but in the meantime, Stump hopes fans will take the time to digest the tunes he's presenting on Truant Wave, a shiny menagerie of rubber-band funk, electro-pop and spacey, 23rd-century R&B that's also, as Stump explained, a bit of a concept record too.
"It's not as strict a concept album in that I don't have a narrator or epic space battles or anything like that. It's pretty bare-bones and it works as a pop record," he said. "Basically, I took this idealistic, naive little character, and at the beginning of the record, he has the best intentions, the highest hopes, and, as you get towards the middle of the record, he's just such an a--hole. And then the character gets really dark, and then, at the end, I envisioned him being really down and out in Hollywood, like drunk and telling someone, 'Look, kid, don't make the same mistakes I did.' ... It has a narrative, but it's not like I named the characters or know anything about these things."
So, for now, with his EP just out and a sold-out run of shows on the horizon, Stump is content to sit back and watch fans figure out his new direction. And, at the moment, he couldn't be happier with the results.
"I told people about this record a week ago, two weeks ago, there was no promo, no press, nothing, so, for it to do as well as it has, it's definitely gratifying," he said. "In the back of my head, there's always this little voice that's like, 'Just don't blow it,' and so far, so good, you know?"

South Dakota, will you stop f**king with us? Enough already! South Dakota's House of Representatives has approved a bill requiring a woman seeking an abortion to be "counseled" first at a so-called "crisis pregnancy center."
Proponents of the bill say they are trying to assess whether women are being forced to end a pregnancy, as a doctor would have to sign off that the abortion is "voluntary, uncoerced, and informed." The bill, which refers to the woman as a "pregnant mother" (agenda, anyone?), requires the woman to have pre-abortion counseling and be informed what kind of help is available to them if they continue the pregnancy. The bill also requires the woman to wait 72 hours after first meeting with the doctor who'll perform the abortion. That time period is what anti-abortion activists claim is giving women time to think, but in reality it makes scheduling the procedure more difficult for working women or women with children, as they have to go to not one appointment, but two. And considering the vast majority of counties in America do not have an abortion clinic, terminating a pregnancy can involve driving long distances in some parts of the country.
